Driver charged with vehicular homicide after running red light

by | Apr 27, 2018 | vehicular assault or homicide

Many drivers have likely run a red light at some point in their lives. Most have likely been distracted in some way and have simply driven through the intersection. Drivers would count themselves fortunate should they come away from running a red light with no consequences. Others may receive traffic citations or have to deal with the aftermath of minor accidents. However, one Louisiana man was recently arrested on a vehicular homicide charge and other charges when he allegedly crashed into a car after running a traffic light.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reports that a 34-year-old man was driving east in his vehicle on a city street. The man was supposedly traveling at over 80 miles per hour, per police documentation. The speed apparently exceeded the posted speed limit by over 30 miles per hour. The man ran a red light near an intersection, hit the front of one vehicle, then crashed into the driver’s side of another, according to reports.

The driver who was purportedly speeding was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries he suffered in the accident. The driver and passenger of the first car that was struck were not injured. However, police officials stated that the 30-year-old driver and the 29-year-old passenger of the second car that was involved in the incident were killed at the scene.

Law enforcement officials report that, at the time of the accident, the driver had a .19 blood alcohol content level. He has been charged with vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated. He also faces charges of speeding, careless operation and red light violation.

Being charged with vehicular homicide would be a traumatic event. It is imperative for someone facing such a charge to seek the counsel of an experienced Louisiana criminal defense attorney. A strong legal team will strive to present the strongest defense possible and help minimize the negative impact on a client’s life.
