Criminal defense: Hit-and-run driver facing felony charges

by | Dec 13, 2017 | criminal defense

Louisiana police say that the man responsible for a fatal hit-and-run accident turned himself in only a short while after the crash. It is not clear why the driver initially fled the scene of the pedestrian accident. He is now facing felony charges, which can require a more vigorous criminal defense approach than misdemeanors.

Authorities were initially notified of a pedestrian accident around 6 a.m. When they arrived, they discovered that the 51-year-old victim had died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the vehicle that hit the woman, however, was nowhere to be found. After investigating the scene, police determined that debris left behind by the responsible vehicle indicated that it was likely a white Hummer traveling eastbound at the time of the wreck.

A description of the vehicle believed to be involved in the accident was released later that same morning. Police also noted that the vehicle might have damage to its front right side. Shortly after this release, a 34-year-old man claimed that he was the responsible driver and turned himself in. Following questioning, he was arrested and charged with a felony for a hit-and-run.

Felony charges are no small matter. Defendants charged with felony counts often face extensive time behind bars and incredibly steep fines if convicted, and resulting criminal records can eliminate certain opportunities for future employment. For most Louisiana defendants, timely action when creating a thorough criminal defense plan can be essential for achieving the best possible outcome for their individual situations.
