In light of the tense atmosphere in Louisiana and other parts of the country, it may be difficult to predict the behavior of some people when they come in contact with law enforcement. A suspect may attempt to flee or turn and fight. In either case, it may leave police with few options. A recent altercation with police may have ended in tragedy. Instead, one man is likely consulting with a criminal defense attorney.
Police responded to a hit-and-run accident one afternoon and were interviewing the person whose car had been struck. The person police suspected of causing the accident appeared to be leaving the scene in his car, so police began to pursue with lights and sirens. Officers say that, in an attempt to elude police, the driver of the fleeing car lost control and crashed.
He then exited his vehicle and began to run from officers. When police surrounded him, the man allegedly pulled a gun and aimed it at one of the officers. Apparently no shots were fired, and no one was injured. The man escaped to his home nearby where a K-9 unit tracked him and he was arrested. Police say they found the gun used in the incident in a subsequent search of the man's apartment.
The man is now facing charges of aggravated flight in a vehicle and aggravated assault on police. Assault on a Louisiana peace officer with a firearm is a charge that could carry a fine and prison sentence of up to 10 years if convicted. The man's criminal defense attorney may focus on getting these charges reduced or dropped.
